Subletting: the rules

If you’re thinking about subletting your home, the first step is to check the terms of your lease agreement. If your lease states that you are allowed to sublet, you should then get in touch with the Home Ownership team.

You will need to provide us with:

  • Proof of address (for yourself and the new tenant)
  • Up to date contact details (for yourself and the new tenant)
  • A copy of the tenancy agreement made between yourself and the new tenant
  • A letter from your mortgage company giving permission to let the property

If your lease does not allow you to sublet, we will not be able to grant you permission. If you continue to sublet your property without permission, we will have to take legal action against you for breach of your lease.
